Latina Equal Pay Day

The Boston Club • Nov 20, 2019

Wednesday, November 20, 2019 is Latina Equal Pay Day. More than 50 years after the passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, Latinas typically earn only 54 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men and must work nearly two full years to earn what white men earn in 12 months.

The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work. The jobs need not be identical, but they must be substantially equal. Still, a persistent gender-based wage gap continues to harm women, their families, and the economy—and is particularly damaging for Latinas.  42% of Americans are not aware of the pay gap between Latinas and white women—and hiring managers are similarly unaware.

This is unacceptable. The Boston Club supports #LatinaEqualPay Join the #LatinaEqualPay Day Social Media Storm on November 20 at 2:00 pm ET. Learn more at www.latinaequalpay.org.

ALPFA Boston, our local chapter of the leading Latino professional organization focused on developing Latino business leaders in the US, believes that Latinas and their families deserve strong policies that support economic security. It is the responsibility of every single one of us to ensure that our workplaces develop and adhere to such policies by advocating for Latina women through workplace sponsorship and the implementation of unconscious bias training for hiring managers.
